Porifera means "pore bearer" in Latin.

Specific Information
A sponge can have three different types of body plans. The first being a simple ascon body plan. The second is the sycon, which is a little more complex. And finally the most complex of the three, the leucon. To the left is a simple diagram of the three body plans.

A sponge's body is full of cells. There are two main differences between some sponges. Some have sharp skeletal insides, called spicules while others have squishy spongocoel. To the right is a diagram labeling each cell type in a sponge.

The Trumpet Sponge (Stylissa stipitata)
- Class Demospongiae
- Shaped similarly to a trumpet. It has a thin tubular bottom and a larger bowl-like top. Cream in color and can grow up to 10 feet high.
- Subtidal in current-swept areas. Southeast Alaska to Washington
- Filter feeders
- Reproduce by budding or by sexual reproduction
- It could also form a new sponge simply by breaking off a piece of its body
- They can live anywhere from a few weeks to several years
